whatever I go

I got notice by airport security today.

For almost 20 years I was a front line clerk at a video store. So over that time span I got to know a lot of people. Families would come in on Friday nights for their weekend videos; kids would ask what our latest games were. I would be asked for recommendations or sometimes people would just come in to talk. It was a nice job.

Because I was there so long, I became a fixture in the neighbourhood and everyone knew me by name. So after our store closed in 2015, I would find myself in a random part of Vancouver and I would hear “Hey Alan” and there would be someone who knew me.

So I was going through airport security and needed to be wanded. The security officer was a guy in his late 20s was checking my wallet and belt. “Hey Alan, long time no see! Can you guess where I know you from?”

“The video store?”

He grinned, “Yeah, it’s been a while! I remember when we would get movies from you. Good times, good times!”

We chatted a bit about where I was going and he waved me through. I regularly meet people who I haven’t seen in years and they tell me how much the store meant to them when they were young. It’s nice to be remembered that way.
